Downtime and server migration

Post by hybrid »

My old employer had some system issues today, so the website went down. Not sure exactly what happened.

Anyway, I have decided to bite the bullet and rent my own server from now on. The downside is that for the first time, this website will cost me money each month. The upside is that we will control our own destiny.

Some time over the weekend I will start migrating the website over.

When this happens, I'll have to shut the website down again so that nothing changes while the cutover happens.

I'm starting with the absolute basic server, which hopefully will suffice. If it's not enough space I will have to upgrade and may have to introduce some banners or something to help cover the costs - although I want to avoid advertising altogether if I can, because I'm not a fan.

It's not a lot of money if we can get away with the basic plan.
I don't want to take money unless I absolutely have to.

Happy to offer some kind of financial assistance in the interim.

I guess you're at that point in life where a hobby/pastime becomes more than just a hobby. Sooner or later it had to happen. I wouldn't think you would have too much trouble finding support but a constant stream of income to help fund the website is an option.

Or sponsorship?
Regards, Jim.

Maybe we could put in a certain percentage of the money we get from any sales we make through the forum. Like when someone sells a hood they could put in a bit of the "profit" they make. Wouldn't think it would cover all costs but might help out a bit. Obviously it would rely on the honesty of members but maybe something to think about.

 I'm not trying to be a saint - I just don't want to end up with more money than the site costs me. I'm not here to make money from it.

Even if I go up to the next level, I should get away with approx $30 a month.
Not bothered about the time I put in as (most of the time) I enjoy it.

So you see... even if I said $1/month I could still end up with too much!

For now I would rather just take the hit and not feel bad about ending up with too much.

Ok then, why dont we have a monthly sponsor? Probably only need to contribute every 5 years or so and cuts down on paperwork.
