I'm betting a rocker issue!

That would be my guess as well. Hence my suggestion.

I will someday think of something clever to say.

Adjustable or non adjustable rockers?

If non adjustable, i'd lean towards a bent push rod.

You gotta locate it to fix it tho right....

someone mentioned the screw driver trick...its old hat and rather awkward.

Personally, I use a length of hose as a stethoscope... some 5/16th fuel hose works perfect. One end in the ear, the other chasing the noise.

I'd start with this to get an accurate location for the noise, will stop a lot of guessing and give you a solid start point tracking it down.

Common mistake is people forget some of the early cars were adjustable and hence they screw them right down (as you do for non-adjustable) causing all sorts of issues.

I Found the problem when i pulled out the piston the sir clips from the gudgeon pin had fallen out and got stuck between the piston and the cylinder and when the clips fell in to the sump that's when the knocking started

Glad you found it. On non-pressed setup - often there are two on each side so they don't move (and possibly come loose).

But if it's fully floating rod ie has circlips, not an interference fit gudgeon pin,
How was it was in the wrong spot? Anyway what damage was done?

Nice looking car.
I agree with Shaun as a sleeve will get you going faster.
All depends on your goals though.
