Following another blog site I have a fellow 68 vert fan restoring his ride. Fairly stock but with some minor enhancements. 1 of which is to mount a 3 point retractable seat belt which looks really neat.

During his journey he certainly was aware of the problems with having the top mount installed lower than the shoulder and the dangers this poses in the event of a collision where it actually pulls down on the shoulder instead of just pulling back. He actually found a reference on the VMF site where someone had installed a set of belts using the 92-96 Ford Econoline van passenger belt which has a high tensile steel sash guide. He has fastened this onto a simple "L" shaped bracket which was mounted in the top of the convertible top well back from the "B" pillar. The extended sash guide comes in just nicely in line with the "B" pillar just above the shoulder of the seat.

I won't continue to try describing it here any more but have a look at his ("Alex's") blog and see for yourself...

I would like to know the thoughts of the collective brains trust on this forum of the likelihood of this setup passing engineering in this country - appreciating the different states do vary somewhat...

Been looking at this myself; but as my mustang has highbacks, the belt still goes around the side of the seat, and, based on my measurements, crosses my arm near my shoulder, restricting the use of my arm.

That may work with the low back seats, though. best version I've seen with the 3 point harness in a 'vert.

Good point about the belt being lower than the shoulder, I've seen a few of those.

Mike I'd run the set up you're talking about past the engineers at Licensing, Welshpool. Or one of the private engineers on the Licensing list. I can send some names and numbers to you if you like. Trouble is, it can get very subjective so you may need to try two or three of them to get the answer you want.

I would put the retractor inside the quarter trim coming out of a slot but i like it alot, and i think an engineer would pass that imo.

Is it documented that the belt needs to higher than the shoulder? If you look at later Mustangs (Foxbody) the belt is still lower than the shoulder from what I recall.
I'm just wondering if this back compression isnt an urban myth as there is quite a bit of give in the seat foam and springs ect.
Just a thought.
