I assume you mean a flat tappet cam and you using new lifters and Cam. So you need to make sure you have used a heavy Cam break in lube over the bottom of the lifters and the lobes of the Cam. You can purchase it and some flat tappet Cam include it in the package. Make sure it is for flat tappet Cams though as most people are running rollers which does not need the run in period or as heavy a lube.
Start the engine and quickly bring at up to 1500 to 2000 RPM and for 20 mins keep varying the revs in this rev range. I tend to set the carbi throttle stop so it will not go below 1500 then vary the revs up an down a little for the 20 mins. After this you can let it idle as your done your job. The worst thing to happen is to have it idle when every thing is still new so do not let it drop to low revs if at all possible or if you do then for as short a time as possible.
Run it on penrite 30, the break-in oil has less zinc, and it's a lighter grade to help break in the rings as well. Becarefull with the lube some cams come with, it's no more the an EP oil, ie diff oil. I use a molly based engine assembly lube, again Penrite assembly lube is fine, basically a molly grease that will mix with oil. I also spray them with Molybond solid moly spray, prior to fitting them. Then run them as Boof has suggested.
Holden 253-308s always had issues with cam wear even when oil was good and had zinc. They used to spec the Moly spray, and a tube of moly in the oil, this was prior to cam lube being around, I still have my 25 year old tin of spray so I still use it.
Yeah we threw in some zinc additives and revved it at certain RPM to run the cam in, as per the specifications, from memory around 3000-5000rpm for a set time I think. Then we dropped skids for the sake it, I don't think this had anything to do with running the cam in, I just wanted to
