So the shop got backed up and we covered the shell for the last few months. But it should be primered and have Red Oxide on it by the end of Feb. Then the fun begins, body/fiberglsss fit.

So as all the rest is kinda on hold started tinkering with the veneer dash and console.

Upper console looked easiest, so did that first (a while back). Turned out OK.

Next, the dash.

Laid out the veneer:

Cut a bunch of paper templates to fit the shape. Used the pin guide on the right in the photo below to get the complex curves.

Laid the paper template on and sprayed a light mist of white spray paint to make an outine. Used sharp scissors and a razor blade to trim out the shape.

On the trim, used some black flocking to hide the inevitable minor gaps at the edge as its near impossible to hand cut it to match the shape perfectly. This will hide any glare creeping up from under the edge once glued in.

A light sand with some 100 grit, want a slightly rough look exposing some grain texture, not super flat and glossy.

Can't glue it in as I can't spray the finish due to rain. So halfway, but IMO looking OK. About 1 1/2 hours work so far.

The tough one will be the instrument bezel with all the ovals.

richard i can send u some masking vinyl we use in the sign trade, it has a low tack and u can overlay it on the instrument bezel and gradually trim it with a snapoff blade or stencil knife to get a perfect template to transfer onto the woodgrain. admittedly i do this stuff regularly but im sure someone with your skills could give it a go!

Looking good mert. Cowl repairs look great

As for the X code, I too have only seen a small number of them.

anyone without any knowledge of mustangs and is an owner think there worth big numbers $$ over here.

Had one guy tell me it was an "X" for "experimental" version put out by FORD...was his retirement...hey...he could be right...ya never know

The X code is about as common to find as a 67 K code

The other car, that I find is just as hard to find is the 68 "S" code convertible....I believe you have one of them in your stable aswell Richard?

what were the numbers on them again....230ish?

Matt

335 or so S code convertibles. They made more shells but a bunch were Shelby's so the total is in the 500-ish range if I recollect correctly. Yep got one of them, and a S GT coupe, and a C code GT/CS.

Yeah, the X is "rare", but as this had the wrong engine and trans, 390 2V but not original, a 69 replacement, just not the kind of car you dump a lot of coin into to make original. You do that on a replica! :rotfl:

Greg, I'll take you up on that offer! I have been thinking about some plastic-sheet type stuff light enough to get on the cluster and trim. PM me info on how to get in touch.

And I'd be surprised if you have 68 deluxe belts with 69 Shelby logos! ;-) I may have a spare set of OEM black, let me look...

Well.... while away for the last few weeks the shop got back into it. So some minor progress.

Rust repairs are done. All rust gone!!! Mr. Green

Now in etch primer on the exterior and got in there today and "loose fit" hung the doors, front fenders and mocked up some of the front end fiberglass. And it looks like it is going to fit pretty well, at least the hood and headlight extensions.

Next step, figuring out how all the front fibergalss and bracketry goes together. And getting it all on for bodywork. The rear will be easy...

Then basic body filler/blending to get a good base for a coat of high build filler over everything to give a consistent base for paint over both metal and fiberglass. There will be weeks of hand sanding...
