Hi well sorry it's not about a mustang but I hope someone has had experience with the RA Rodeo V6. My one has done 174k and developed a strange knock in the engine at light throttle around cruising revs of 2200.
I always keep the services up to date but in about 5 weeks/2000km the oil level dropped quite low. I think the oil being low has caused the noise for sure but don't know why It dropped so low and what the noise is caused by.
I gather it's bad news but just wondered if anyone has had a similar experience with this engine and what I should do from here.

Diesel or petrol V6?

Did you change your service provider?
Did they change the oil they use?

Lots of questions.

Does the engine make the same noise when being revved in neutral?

Hi Jas,
I use Nulon synthetic 10w 40
It's the petrol with LPG fitted and yes it makes the same noise in neutral.
It's been great up to now with oil consumption and there are no visible leaks.

Doesnt sound good.
I had an RA rodeo v6 ute as my work car years ago.
Its actually an isuzu motor from memory.
Had the same oil issue.
it was only a low km engine - maybe 30k ??!!
took it back for my normal service and after only around 6000km there was only about 3/4 litre of oil in engine and NO oil light coming on dash.
No leaks on ground.
My mechanic had heard of issues with holden and told me to take to them.
They did an oil consumption test , which it failed miserably.
They replaced the COMPLETE motor for free as a recall.
They didnt put out a recall to the public.

The dealer where i went had 30 of these boat anchors out the back for scrap. They had a constant flow of rodeos being done.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

they told me there was an issue with the engine block castings/material quality.
the bore changes shape and lets oil leak past rings and burn!! thus high oil consumption.

I'M sure holden probably dont do the free repair any more.

I HOPE YOURS IS A DIFFERENT ISSUE OR YOUR UP FOR A NEW MOTOR.

They are prone to doing this and then the drop a big end, Hard to get 2nd hand expensive to rebuild.

The symptoms that you're describing sounds like the bottom end is worn, and/or it's low on oil pressure.

The big ends make noise when there is not much load on the engine, such as free revving, or cruising with very light throttle.

When the engine is under load, the big ends are jammed against the crank, so you don't hear the noise.

It's not going to be good news I'm afraid.

It wasn't a recall.

On the 3.5 motor, when the cat convertor shits itself, the EGR valve sucks up the bits of honeycomb and runs it thru the motor, killing it, thats all.
It isn't a recall, but it is covered by the warranty, if applicable.

I spoke to a local shop today that does 3 of these a week. $4000 later I can have a new rebuilt engine installed. I will weigh that up with just rebuilding my bottom end maybe. The more I look into it the more common this issue seems. I appreciate everyone's help, thanks.

The cats failed, thats all. the dead cats are what killed the engine.

I'm not sure it's the cats, I think it's the EGR breaks up, turns to alluminum oxide (sand paper) which cuts the rings out, they burn up the all the oil then run a big end. Cats would be down stream of the EGR, cant see how it could suck it back from there. Izusu have always had an issue with this even going back to Gemini's and the early 4 cyl Jackaroos, in the 80's Cat should rattle if they are toast.

The EGR sucks up the cat convertor material on decelleration. That is what the Holden Engineers found, and we replaced the long motors and the 2 cats each time.

A customer of ours was too tight to buy the genuine cats, so got his local shop to fit some aftermarket ones.
So the EGR sucked up the welding residue, and killed a new motor, which we replaced under warranty. The new motor was fitted in our workshop, and it died too. The second motor was pulled down, and damage was found.

2 new genuine cats, and a third new engine later, happy days.
