If that is the case and it is coming out the overflow, would replacing the torque converter be the best long term fix?

There is normally a check valve in the pump that often gets removed on performance builds to increase flow to the converter.
It could be that allowing the converter to bleed back to the gearbox.

I read about the check valve. The more I think about it - will probably end up pulling the transmission and have a shop go through it and see what they think before I decide to go with something else.
