Ok, have a 65 GT 289, 4spd and power steering....What are the best extractors in terms of quality, fit and value for money I should be looking at? Thanks....grunt

I believe JBA Shorty headers are the way to go recommended by those in the know (not me) but others
they definitely arent the cheapest but quality and good fit (apparently)

I have jba. Fit perfect for me. I thought they were a great product as did my mechanic fitting them lol

Try Capital Classics - they carry a Scott Drake copy of the JBAs and they fit very well.

I just fitted a set of JBA "shorty" headers to Ron's 69 Mach 1 (lucy066).

Every modified Mustang I build (& I have built many) I fit those headers. Never had an issue with any.

BTW, I always get the ceramic coated ones. Thumbs Up

Price is not an issue when something works & you never have to touch it again. Poke

Although I have not fitted them to a RHD aplication, this pic shows they hug the block & pipes come out similar to each other, therefore would miss a RHD steering box.

(edit) With a R&P it would suit either application (RH or LD drive)

BTW, they also make a variant of these headers if you are running a "cable clutch"

I have a set of Hookers on my 66GT, and they do sound good, not recommending or otherwise, they do hang low though and with the power steering I also have the aftermarket power steering ram drop down bracket, which looks ugly.

I do like the look and concept of the JBA shorties, but correct me if im wrong, isn't the idea of headers that all pipes are the same length from the manifold to the collector, therefore causing equal pressure on all four cylinders on each side, happy to be corrected?

No idea as I am not an "engine guy", but I do know these headers work well, as driving many of my builds will attest. Good power along with decent MPG is what I look for, they are part of that equation.

They do not hang below the car (actually allow the header pipe to be where the stock pipe is located or above) & does not require the power steer drop down bracket (which increases the leverage on the bolts to the rail, usually pulling the bottom ones out over time)

Tuned length headers (AKA extractors) are meant to provide a performance boost as the exhaust leaving the pipe from one cylinder creates a vacuum and scavenges exhaust from the next cylinder. Removing more exhaust from the cylinder means more room for the bang juice.

However, even shorty headers and Tri-Y headers should still flow better than the standard cast steel items anyway.
