.ok so Santa left me some JBA stainless shorties, i must have been good.

.
As you can see there is sooooooooooooooooo much room LHS

.and again on the RHS

.
As usual it there is an issue, the steering knuckle hits the header, great...the other knuckle is under the header

so do i drill a hole in the headers and slide the steering connector through the pipes?? or start the car and wait till the headers glow. then smash the shit out of them with a mallet....
i seam to go 1 step forward 2 steps back lately....
so now im thinking Santa has been watching me and i was on the Naughty list.....Doh

.

Column is too long. Should be flush with the firewall for a rack. The longer the link between the rack & column the better.

It will always be tight as they are made for LHD. So yes you will have to mod them.

Oz, was just moving the column around to see how close I could get it. I think I'll take off the headers and take them to an exhaust place, I'd mod them myself but they are stainless ( of course) just to make things a little harder....

Have you seen this Engine Masters comparison between cast, mid and long tube headers??

Just slightly dent the headers to help fit them. You are just about there. I have had to always modifiy LHD headers for a RHD car. Some are easier than others. Your not to far away.

As far as the engine masters test referenced above - it is a good one and worked out as I expected. But do not equate those very nice for cast headers to a stock Windsor header. The ford unit is total rubbish.

I will someday think of something clever to say.

Do I heat them up, or beat the shit out of them like a red headed step child..

Just use a heavy hammer - support the tube so it does not crush where not necessary.
One side needs little clearance and the other more because of the way the engine moves to one side under load. In most cases a 1/16th is enough an 1/8th is ideal. I have had to move tubes now and then so this is an option though looks mostly a small dent with a ball-peen hammer in few spots is all you need (other than where the steering shaft is to go - maybe).

What I was getting at Boof is that the difference in HP between the shorties and stock headers using stock heads would be not be noticeable until over 5k. Most people don't regularly go anywhere near that in a street driven car, especially an auto. Just saying!

I do agree - the benefit is minimal. The stock Windsor head's exhaust port is terrible so post that crappy port any improvements do not always result in a significant increase. Now a long tube header is better because the length results it tuned for lower RPM. Short tubes are optimised for higher RPM. This is shown clearly in the above video with a massive improvement in performance at a lower RPM over the other short tube headers (both cast and shorties). Now to a large degree the Camshaft has a big influence on the benefit found from the exhaust header selected. A stock Cam Windsor (especially with stock heads) will show far lower benefit than if a performance camshaft is utilised. Naturally many install these parts for future benefits from future upgrades. In any case a street engine benefits most from increases in engine capacity or using a forced induction upgrade such as a super charger.

Do you have 65 or 66 mounts in it that makes a big difference, I'm not fan of the JBA shorties the 351 convesrion ones Astro got were junk. 66 mounts moves the engine down and back, You know the RHD headmans may clear the shaft. Got a set here

Well I ordered 66 mounts, not sure how to tell the difference.
The reason I got the JBA,s is due to the GP 40 heads, it was either those or hi Po,s....

Yes but your car is RHD they are made for LHD only. Going by the pics you posted I cannot see how they can be modded. You have to get that steering link longer and that will only make it worse for room.

Headers gave me a big headache, i had access to a pacemaker wholesaler thanks to Exhausted and took home many versions of headers from XY- EF shorties, long tube, tri Y's no pair would ever fit and needed lots of mods to clear the steering (i have RRS) XY long tube was the closest for RHS but still needed 2 tubes modified but then left side hit starter.
I gave up and made my own.
