I have put a cable conversion in my 70 with a t5 box I am having a little trouble with the amount of travel needed on the clutch fork to release the clutch .it is an early diaphragm pressure plate not a 3 finger type, to get it to work I have to put a little preload on the throw out which goes against everything I know but rang a gearbox shop and they said not un common these days . my question is
1 is pre load ok
2 or is there a difference between later pressure plate diaphragms movement needing less movement to release the plate than the earlier ford 70 -74

Modern Driveline tells you to pre-load. I do it on all my cable conversions.

Doesn't it flog the trust bearing though? I'd rip it out and take the pressure plate to Jim Berry at Race clutch and have him alter the pivot point of the diaphragm. Worth a chat in anycase, and be prepared for a long chat with Jim.

ozbilt could you give me the link for the page at mdl that describes how to preload properly. I was told by the gearbox shops i spoke to little preload don't hurt as long its not starting to clamp down

In the printed instructions I get with each conversion. If I can find an old one I will give you the specs. From memory it was touching & then another 1/8" (3mm).

great thanks probably about what ive done just concerned about the t/o more than anything, clutch starts to grab about 1" off the floor and full clamp about 1/2 way up woks good just concerned about the t/o as I said

Never had one flog out & most of the cars, I have converted, are daily drivers, if not every weekend drivers.

spoke to a clutch place and they will reset my pressure plate to use less travel to disengage
unless fairlane Cleveland clutch 69 /70 is the wrong one
