XR GT had an A code engine, Ford Australia designated it a HiPo K code, but the 271hp K code engine never made it here. All we got was the 225hp engine, so an A code in US speak. Australia was not ready for a solid lifter, rough idling engine in a car that was basically a Fairmont.

So your Mustang A code engine you sourced is the same as what you originally had .......


Ok I stand corrected XR GT's did not come with K codes. It was definitely a solid lifter HiPo engine as it had all the mustang guys at the shop wetting themselves and it came out out of a wrecked XR that I was told was a GT what it was in before that I do not know.

Amazing that with all the hype of the XR GT in 60s Austraia that it was only a four barrel A code. It must have been a horsepower starved place back then

Time for this slack arse to give up another update ........... Embarrassed

Now that the rear rails are square & even, it was time for the trunk floors to come out .......



The uprights next to the trap door opening were sad, so they went as well. Cannot buy replacements, so I will be fabricating them.

Yes, that is a sheet of aluminium screwed on there .....



The right hand side upright was rusty, sorry no "before" pics ..... Very Happy



The transition panel has been cut out as well, not all of it yet, just the badly repaired section. Will see when the new one arrives as to how much I use ........

So while we wait on the rear transition panel I moved onto the conversion to right hand drive. As John has said in an earlier post, I have had the parts here for a few years for the suspension side of the conversion. Now time for the metal work.

Although the car will receive non standard parts for the brake, clutch & heater A/C, I make the conversion to suit standard parts if they are to be fitted later. Hopefully the dash fascia reversal (scanning & then CNC) are going well as that will make dash conversions in the early cars look totally correct ...... Like

Firewall was cut out & then sectioned.







The line is where the inner part of the rail would be to where the steering column comes through (exact reversal of the left hand drive). Note the brake master holes are inboard on the left hand drive & if that section was moved directly across, there would be no room for a booster as it would hit the hood hinge & also have little room before the tower ........



This was remedied by moving the column hole .......



Now that same black line (in the first pic) will be through the center of the master cyl hole ......



I took the opportunity to reinforce the back of the brake mounting area as they are prone to cracking & I wanted to spread the load ......





Test fitted the pedal box & twin masters ........

Master cyl & column support panel clamped in place wile I make up the surrounding panels ......



I made a pattern & fabbed a piece, then tacked it up on the bench once it was cut out. Note the line representing the inner of the rail now runs through the center of the master hole, just like the left hand drive position .......



Top section fitted .......



Test fitted (will weld once the complete firewall is tacked together ......



The pressed shape is to minimize distortion when welding the new section of the inner skirt to the firewall later in the conversion ......



Now to the next fun part, making a Vintage Air heater A/C unit fit a right hand drive car. They are huge (same size as the stock heater) & cannot be turned around or upside down. So a little work & thinking will be recruited as I also need to make room for the wiper motor when they are converted (that will happen before the firewall is welded in place) .......



What will help is that I have to repair the heater inlet & outlet water tubes, so will re-route them while I am repairing them. The A/C high & low pressure lines also need to come out of the firewall where the engine will not interfere (or visa versa) ........

Repair them as they only need the bottom 40mm
