- allows the two wheels to vary in speed in corners with no resistance.
- under power the load is distributed to the side with the least grip.
- operates as a Open diff by default in that in corners two wheels vary speed
- under power the centre distributes to highest grip as long as wheel resistance is present.
- allows the two wheels to vary in speed in corners under no load conditions
- true locker under load as both tyres will turn at identical speeds regardless of grip. Under load the locked center will not release.
LSD Plate based
- allows the two wheels to vary in speed in corners with resistance over pressure plate friction
- under power provide no change to behaviour, e.g., keeps both wheels the same as long as resistance does not over power the pressure plate friction.
Some people will have different views (as always).
Best conditions of use;
- Empty wallet. This is inexpensive factory only option.
- Best street only diff.
- Works best when wheels are on the ground always (hopefully)
- Can be used in a mild Street / Strip application.
- In comparison to LSD clutch based design, TT has no maintenance, does not require special diff oils and does not degrade over time.
- Best diff for inexperienced drivers (as its default mode is same as an open diff).
- Best serious street / strip and track center.
Note: Use a spool for strip only car.
- A true locker center. Under load it locks and that is it. Only unlocks when power is released.
- Stronger design than all other centers.
- has no maintenance, does not require special diff oils and does not degrade over time.
- Track use allows controlled over steer late in the corners (as long as suspension does not wind up and as a result bounce the rear around - same applies for acceleration in strip work). V8 super cars for example use a DL.
- Factory option for most performance early mustangs.
LSD Plate based:
- Up graded street and front diff use for Offroad 4WD.
- Less expensive than TT or DL.
- Does have LSD action when wheel is off or on the ground.
- Common to use in front of offroad 4WD cars.
- Simple design - spring loaded friction plates.
- Is quiet (like the TT) compared to DL which can produce click noises when locking and unlocking. Note: Modern designs do not make much if any noise [I know I have one].
All of the above why I go plate. Positive drive, no surprises when you think both wheels will lock and they don't.
Remember its an UNLOADED wheel that will spin, not just one off the ground.
So when you hook into a corner and your front springs are a bit soft, the rear picks up and Budda Bing wheel spin on one wheel.
