Dan Gurney passes away

Post by ozbilt »

Motor racing great Dan Gurney has passed away, aged 86. He was a great from back in the days where racing drivers drove everything.

I never got to meet him, but have the privilege of restoring one of his cars, the Lotus 19B. Picture of it is in my office here at Duggo. I was not at the vintage meet at Laguna Seca when the newly restored car ran again & Dan was there.

Picture of the Lotus with Gordon Gimbel driving it after the restoration

I would say Dan as he was the first to win over 4 major categories of motor racing, F1, Indycar, Sports Car and NASCAR. He drove for Carroll (Ford actually) in both the Ford GT at LeMans (won in 1967), also Ford Cobras and Daytona Coupe.

The Lotus pictured above was 289 powered, I believe the first one built.
