Husky's 65 Restomod

Post by Husky65 »

Hey fellas,
I haven't posted much on this forum but have been a long time reader as there is so much knowledge on this forum without the bs that some forums have. I have learned a lot and utilized some of that on my build.

My car has just come off a 2 year build which probably took a bit longer than planned as I was away for a fair bit of it.
I have a build thread on the mustang.org forum, and if you want to check the full thing out head on over there. I won't do a full build thread on here, but I will just give a quick overview with some pictures, and then use this for future fixes/upgrade updates.

Now, as anyone that has done a build knows, even though the car is on the road and the 'main' work is done, it is not finished. I am still working through some minor bugs and noises(they are very minor), and stupidly enough I am already looking for some power upgrades in the near future. I will post up about that jazz here.

I have met Kerry before, who made up some seat brackets for me, and look forward to perhaps meeting a few more of you in the near future.

we dont use that sort of attitude here.. :D .. its all about the tinkering! glad to see another restomod in the making. Best thing about restomods is you can make it your own. Much cooler builds and talent over this side of the fence as you have already met and seen.

In a quick overview, I started out with a 65 coupe that I purchased locally of a friend of a friend. The body was in good nick, it had rust repairs earlier in its life and had a 10ft paint job on it. I drove it for about a year before I decided to strip it down and build it back up.

The decision was made to not do any body work unless it was necessary, as for a driver it was fine. Cost was also a factor in this decision, and the gain vs the outlay wasn't worth it in our opinion.

In the end their was a tiny rust patch near the passenger sills that was cut out, and the cowl vents ended up being rusted out also, so they were cut out and shut with sheetmetal, as I had no need for them with the Old Air ac system.

The rest of the time, research and money was spent on the mechanical aspect of the car and the interior. I wanted efi, and decided to go with the ford system for ease of service and parts.
This theme continued with the rest of the car, as I tried to keep factory parts where possible, for ease of service. I tried to buy brand new factory parts where possible, however there were a couple parts that I couldn't get new, such as the stock fuel rail.
Initially I was going to use the BTR auto, however I changed my mind to a T5 and glad I did, as it's so much fun to drive.

Anyway, I'm just going to copy and paste the build list in the next post, so you get an idea of where it's at. I apologize in advance as I have listed everything, even sensors, so just read the bits you feel necessary. It also has 'new' listed there on certain items, so if I ever sell it I can let the owner know the km's that each part has done. It's more of a 'for sale' add.

Below is how it was when I bought it.

Car looks really nice. What is the hood scoop? Looks a bit like a HO falcon.

It's just a shaker intake that was on the car when I bought it. I wanted to keep the stock hood for the time being which meant keeping the shaker intake, which is just mounted onto a BA XR8 shaker intake base.
To be honest, it's not really doing much, but until I need a cowl hood(hint hint) I won't be replacing it.

Excellent post - just how I like to see a build. Good work. I am sure that car is a lot of fun to drive. Glad your posting some details here. Good stuff.
I will someday think of something clever to say.

Thanks fellas. Surprisingly there weren't too many teething issues, and none concerning wiring which I did myself(well not yet anyway).

Thing I need to fix so far:

-AC lines are leaking at one factory fitting and two welded fittings....the guy who did the lines will take care of that for me
-There is a small leak that appeared over the last few weeks which ends up on the bottom of the bellhousing. I can feel it coming down the scatter shield. I've checked the intake manifold and valve covers, but definitely dry there. Could be rear main or flywheel bolts. I's annoying but what do you do.
-The borgeson box leaked at the sector shaft from the get go. Only small, doesn't drip on the floor yet but I'm sure it will get worse. Still not sure what I'm going to do there....a rack is tempting, however I may replace it with the new one piece borgeson box.
-Drivers window won't go up all the way, i've exhausted my knowledge trying to fix that and will have to take it to someone more cluey with mustang windows. This was happening before I put the power regulators in also, and it's not the stops either.
-The Old Air electric heater valve doesn't want to open up. Not a big deal as I don't think I'll ever use the heater in this.
-The Newport wiper motor is very noisy. Not sure if it's the motor or mounted incorrectly, again, not a big deal, it works which is the main thing for now.

There are also a couple of suspension/braking noises but I'm working through that. Just need to put more km's on it now and see what else appears.

The car gets tuned this week at CMS in liverpool. Joe there is on the money with the older ford systems so we will see how she goes.

Did you glue the flywheel bolts in? if not that will be your leak. Car looks great, now the question is how quick is it?

Mate the shop did the engine/tranny build/install. It's only a small leak but I'd like to get on top of it now.

Look, it's not quick quick by any means. I have driven some pretty fast cars and this isn't a fast car. But then again it a pretty stock motor really. Judging by AU XR8's that have similar mods and cam, they are making anywhere from 240-270rwhp depending on a few different factors. But I guess we will find out soon.

I can see myself supercharging this thing in the near future if I can find a decently priced Kenne Bell piece.
