Special Edition Mustangs

Post by Cameron »

Modern cars flaunt the title "special edition" the same way that Kim Kardashian flaunts her arse. There is alot of it - and it really isnt that special. I remember a couple of years ago (Sydney Olympics most likely) there was some Hyundai Sport junking around with Olympic Edition blazed along the sides like some south korean vinyl diarrhoea. Holden (and probably ford as well) have done the same with Special Edition Commodores celebrating 25years with the only discernable difference being a speccy badge on the fender.

My 65 mustang aside, probably the only other mustang that i would ever own is a California Special. Absolutely love the things. Had i.. been aware they existed before i bought my car i may have picked one up instead. But its a mute point because on the other hand perhaps, like a greasy, metalic V8 roaring wine my taste for mustangs started with the 65 and matured over time. Culminating in my fondness for the CS.

Now, Hybrid is probably thinking that i put this in the wrong forum. You other buggars probably think that i have confused this website for my blog. But there is method to my madness. And if anything, it just makes you realise how devoid the Australian car market is. Ladies and Gentlemen. Or actually just Gentlemen. Actually; Guys. There are some bloody cracking modern mustangs breaching their stables at the moment. It is said that the American made automobile industry is still struggling, but i genuinely dont understand it if they are pumping out cars like this. How any red blooded male between the ages of 5 and 105 doesnt own one i dont know. Yeah yeah the argument of "they dont have money". Whatever.I would sell my supple mid 20's body on the streets until i am sitting in the drivers seat of one of these babies.

Red Tail Mustang GT (Ford)
The new Mustang GT, dubbed the Red Tails Edition, was inspired by the African-American World War II squadron of P-51 Mustang fighter pilots. The Tuskegee Airmen, as they were known, contributed much not only to the war effort but also to aviation and civil rights, and were recently immortalized in the Red Tails action film.

Ford Mustang RTR (Vaughn Gittin Jr)

The product is called the Mustang RTR, and it's a tempting alternative to the usual suspects from the likes of Saleen and Roush. The overall look and feel is more tasteful than you'd expect of a Formula D champ, and now Gittin's crew has released a series of updates for the 2013 model. With full aero kit and 19" rims, the latest Mustang RTR can be had in two trims - the basic Spec 1 (for $6,250 over stock) and the fully-loaded Spec 2 ($11,995) - and in two states of tune: with 525 horsepower or 624. Both are achieved with a Ford Racing supercharger, and the best part is it can all be installed right there at your local dealership.

Mustag v6 RS (Roush)

Ford tuning specialist Roush recently revealed a new package for the 2013 V6 Mustang they have dubbed the Roush Six, or RS package. $4,000 gets you a mean-looking Mustang with a lowered suspension, Brembo brakes, a front chin splitter and 19-inch painted alloys.

Feel free to post your own. I dont understand why Ford hasnt launched the Muzzy in Australia (i know different topic alltogether) but it wouldnt just murder the opposition. It would be a massacre. It is an absolute phenom.

Is it just me, or does the 'red tail' have two set of exhausts - front fenders and dual out the back?! I'm assuming the front fenders are non operational ;)

Correct as they just mimic the headers on the aircraft

Sorry Kerry - I was being a bit tongue-in-cheek ;)

I understand the idea of theming stuff (especially given the Tuskegee story, and that the P51 is such an iconic aircraft (I'm a big warbird nut)), but tacking on 'fake' headers just feels kind of tacky to me.

Now... if they were operational (apart from being ear bleeding loud), THAT would be a statement on a Sunday arvo cruise!

Nostalgia Drag sounds great fun! :)

We actually just moved back from the US - we were living in California - San Carlos (in the heart of Silicon Valley) for most of the last year. It was fun, but ultimately US wasn't for us - we love Melbourne, and the work I went there for wasn't what I'd hoped. Biggest regret was not buying more parts before we left, but the move was VERY expensive, so funds were a bit tight.

I remember you moving over there & I was not able to hook up..... :(

You had one of the best US shows very close to you at Half Moon Bay, the pacific Coast Dream Machines. Organized by a friend of mine (nice 70 B2) it is a great show that features anything with an engine, so old fighter planes, bombers to dragsters & funny cars, hot rods, customs, tractors etc. Amazing event.

No worries - we were expecting to be there for about 4 years, so while I hoped we'd hook up, I figured there was loads of time :)

Wow! Dream Machines would have been good! We flew out early April, so would have missed it anyway. :( Went out to Half Moon Bay often - such a nice place and good beaches - know it very well.

We did stop in at Miramar Airforce base "Flying Leathernecks" near San Diego - the air museum was pretty small but had some good aircraft. They have an F4 Phantom and and a Harrier there, both of which I've never got close to before, so that was cool. Not much prop aircraft - a Grumman Avenger was the best of it from memory.

Anyway - the Melbourne AirShow isn't half bad - good selection of aircraft and always a few warbirds - try and get down every year or two :)

You'll find this everywhere, I have a special edition Stanley knife, it's maroon with a gold stamp stating it's a special edition, nothing else is different about it compared to any other year model that was churned out within the same era.

One of my favourite special editions is by Fender - not entirely safe for work.

I've always thought the gills you find on a 65 headlamp bucket kind of resembled the headers.
Napes wrote:tacking on 'fake' headers just feels kind of tacky to me.
They look exceptionally tacky, like something you'd find on a bad ricer.

If you are going to put fake headers on a car I would at least hide the tail pipes so it is not so immediately obvious they are fake.

I do like the look of the new models but some of the interior shots look ugly. That black crinkly plastic that is used in so many car nowadays is hideous and cheap looking, surely they can come up with something nicer then that. IMO.

They have to work to a budget, I can't imagine that crinkle would be any less expensive than another finish, in fact probably even more expensive to create the die.

They probably had focus groups rate different finishes and that one was most popular.
