I dont know if its such a good idea, The AOD has a history of failure when exposed to any power, C4 and GV is a safe but expensive direction.
You could always go with the electronic AOD, now they are supposed to be OK.

Drove this one often. 351W, C6-GV absolute weapon on the road.

TACoupe (Roy) on here has a neat 94 Lightning truck that is blown & has a GV after the AOD. A really quick truck that I had the pleasure of looking after (read driving.. ) for some time at my shop in the late 90's.

He ran that in the Silver State Classic across Nevada in 96 from memory.....

I didn't realise that GV was for a manual transmission also, I only thought they were for an auto.

The AOD can be built to be stronger if needed (400hp+), by using parts from later model boxes, but it depends what you want to do and how much money you have to spend.
GV is a great idea, but expensive and more work involved.
AOD for a stock engine should be absolutely fine if it's built properly.

So if you've got the money and want 6 speeds, go GV, otherwise I think AOD would be fine for your setup.

No they have one for a toploader. Pretty cool - would give you effectively 8 speeds !

I would love to go GV one day. Very cool.

I have the electronic version of the aod, its actually a 4r70w the benefit of this is the 4r70w has a 2.84 1st gear v the c4 2.46 so you get a better launch, also the electronic box allows precise gear shifts via computer maping, electronic has a lockup converter for much more efficent hwy cruising( no converter flare when cruising on hwy which means less heat being produced and about 200rpm less revs ) .70 overdrive, has 2 settings one for race and one for street so you can have a smooth shift for street or flick the switch for a harder shift for race that holds gear longer, to be honest will not cost much more than rebuilding your c4 or c6 and adding a GV
cheers chris.

Chris, yep that box is another option that I forgot about. You just have to get a controller for it.

That's actually the box that you can use the parts from in a regular AOD to make them much more reliable at higher HP.

Can't quite remember but the computer and harness was around $500us, hybrid alot of the aod's being rebuilt now are using the 4r70w internals cause they are much stronger and have better gearing ,like i said you get the over drive but you also get much more, with the electronic version but the aod with the 4r70w internals is a good and cheaper option than rebuilding your c4 and gv.

Yep.. for those wondering, the AODE have billet steel drums instead of cast drums, as well as better gearing and mechanical diodes instead of the one way clutches found in the AOD. The AOD can take the AODE drums and diodes.

The original AOD also had an issue with the circlip on the front drum coming off under heavy thrashing and getting chewed up in the process. There is a spiral ring that can be used in place of the circlip to cure that issue too. The AOD has a bad name in some circles, but all the issues can be rectified.
