Water pump backing plates

Hi all,

I am looking at a USMW water pump on evilbay that does not use a backing plate and have a couple of questions.

1) is USMW a quality product?
2) does it matter if it doesn't use a backing plate (read somewhere this can cause overheating if left off)?
