Just heard an LA gangsta tried to gold plate his nuts. He died from medical complications.

linkbeef.com/l-a-gang-...-to-death/

FWIW I think this may be BS.

Dredging up and old thread but have played with blacking steels before and have a few old gunsmithing recipes from the 50's. The ones below use commonly available products (still).

Parkerising (phosphating)
Ratio is
Phosphoric Acid 4gms
Manganese Dioxide 2.5gms
Distilled water 1 quart

Rolling boil for between 30 to 90mins. Add water to maintain levels and correct colour is achieved. Then remove and neutralise by using a boiling water bath.

Dry then heat to point where water rolls off the metal and dip into linseed oil then heated to dry again.

(Original parkerising recipe was much heavier in phosphoric acide at 24gms/1.5gms mang to the quart (600ml).

Manganese dioxide is the outer part of a dry cell battery so you can get it by cutting open some old D cells.
Phosphoric acid is most rust convertors.
A blacking recipe is:

lye (caustic soda) 2parts
ammonium nitrate (white fertiliser 33% type) 1 part
water

example was 4 litres of water, 5 pound of lye, 2 1/2 of Ammon nitrate

Must be done at a rolling boil of 140-145C
Wash/dry and oil normally.
This is a strong blacking process that will withstand a wire brush.

The caustic soda is used to elevate the boiling temperature of the water to allow the blacking process.

This is a very long life mix, so you could do multiple batches with one 4 litre batch just store in in a sealed drum to stop evaporation.

Just add a caution with the caustic soda recipe.

All good info though.

I have the blueing and blacking sections as a PDF if there is a way of adding it as a resource.

Really enjoy this site, particularly since there are quite a few QLD'ers here. 😀

Craig,
anyone should be able to add a download to the downloads section - under "Community" in the menu on the left.
Let me know if you can't work it out and you can email it to me to put up.

seems I need to place the file on a file sharing site to upload it? So I'm no nerd. Give me an email and I'll let you add it direct.

Cheers
