Finally its been 4 mths since i did the base coat before doing the centre stripes on the rotisery. Then removed off the rotisery and hung all the panels, only to find i wasnt going to get the new lh fender to fit correctly to the door and was out in other sections. I then had to panel beat and paint the original fender i really didnt want to use which led to me running out of paint. I got another 4 litres mixed up but wasnt really going to match the old paint and i had stuffed up some other areas while trying to make things better. So then i resprayed the whole car again so all the paint matched.
Then about a week ago, early morning before it got too hot, i started wiping all the dust and pollen away that fell from my homemade sealed spraybooth and then prep washed, that took a few hours. well the first 2 coats went on well but by 10 o'clock my shed reached 35 degrees and the overspray was drying and making a mess of all the paint.
I sanded it all smooth again a few days ago and this morning got out there early wiped of all the dust and pollen off the paint again and very hesitantly tried again.
After 3 more coats of clear, 7 in total it finally all came together even though it reached 32 degrees again. Im finally satisfied, its still a home painjob and i cant say it is laser straight but it looks great, and now i can give it a light rub over and then buff.
Couple of parts i picked up the other day along with my convertible parts order. Speed sensor/speedo cable drive adapter so i can run my original speedo rather than electronic. And fuel pump inertia cut off switch.
Also my stainless steel 2.5" Magnaflow twin system
SPECT"]Does that make this 'Hump Day' ?
Over the hump and now onto assembly?
Congrats Scott, It looks brilliant. Home paintjob or not... I'd be happy with it...
Yes it does mate, next step is motor in and fit the fairlane aircon and wiring harness back in under the dash and decide how i want everything before finishing the dash RH converstion, then everything is just refitting parts.
That paint had really done my head in, never had so many things go wrong painting a car. I have previously painted complete cars including my 2 daughters Corolla and Camry , a Tarago and more recently my mates VW with no problems and good results.
Im glad its over and cant wait to paint the convertible now.
