Well, after a quick trip up to Newcastle for the Nations with the young bloke.
Would seem I have a new part to restore.

67'er followed me up from Sydney and said there seemed to be a burning rubber smell coming from the old 66.
Dame, after a quick converse, the general consensus was that the C4 may have been dropping ATF into/onto the manifold. So worse case, I run the gear box dry and fry it………
Didn’t have anything to block the line off if we disconnected it. Car ran like a dog if it wasn't blocked off.
After a few stop’s along the way home, the levels remained the same.
So maybe it wasn’t the already worn out C4……..

As we get closer to Canberra there is a little more noise, (read whine)
No missus in the Muzzie, just the son, who had been very well behaved the whole weekend. Well done son Thumbs Up and Happy Birthday. Cheer

So……what could it be?
Noise gets a little worse. Now we are just outside Canberra and the old girl had done not so bad.
However, the whine is coming from the back of the car. So must be the diff.

Thinking on it, I had never even check the diff in the time I owned the car, well didn’t check more then “oh, that’s the diff, that’s good it has one”
As I read on Mustang Monthly I am not the only one
“Rear axles are something we don't think about often. In fact, rearends are likely the most uninteresting part of a classic Mustang until they fail, or until a sparky upstart blows your doors off at the traffic light, and then you're wishing you had a set of 3.91 gears. When rearends fail, they leave us stranded, or they follow us home in noisy protest”

Read more: www.mustangmonthly.com...z1rVwIqeUI

Anyway, we get home (noise didn’t get any worse BTW) and I stick my head under the car with a touch.
Would appear that there is oil or something, above the diff. Sprayed up there like it would if something was spinning flicking it up.

Now being the Gumby I am, thought I would ask.
1/ What is there that may have let go?
2/ Would this maybe have been the smell that 67’er had in counted? While trailing in my dust.
3/ Is it a don’t drive you think before it is fixed?

BTW I was always going to have it freshened up with some other stuff, like the C4 that’s bleeding ATF while sitting turned off resting. (thanks Shaunp for the tip about the breather, but it may be sooner rather then later I pull this out also) So no biggy to have to do diff now. More just trying to learn and maybe help someone else down the track that has a similar situation

Cheers,
j

Sounds like the pinion seal may have let go.
Anyway, well done on the trip with the young'un. .... and the beauty of it all, despite any protest or bad smells.... the old girl didnt let you down.
cheers

Plus 1 for the pinion oil seal.
The tube Dave was trying to block was the vacum line from the vacum can on the auto (C4). The reason it ran like a dog was because, as he said, you had unmetered air going into the manifold, hence we had to reconnect it. Sounds like the diff may have been the issue anyway.
Cheers

How bad is the noise really. Could it be you were intensely monitoring all noises and was getting a bit paranoid? Poke

na Nuts, its a whine and there is something all over the bottom of my car. Moe said a while ago I had a bit of noise there, hence the plan to pull it restore housing and have the centre looked at.
Just hadn't got around to it, was a winter job project this year.

I will get under the car in the next few nights, I have a good workshop again, house sitting for my parents.

I will report in after that

Cheers,
j

The XY falcon I had....had a whinning noise coming from the diff. As you own a car for a while you get to noticed the different and new rattles and squeaks.

Anyway, I got a guy to service it....and he said some of the bolts were fused on by the heat of it. He couldn't remove the cover plate. The drainage plug was removalable....but he found NO fluid in there.

Said that was the problem. Only way he could short term fix it was to squirt some fluid in there quickly and seal it back up.

Less noisy after that but I still could hear the whirring.

Good to hear you made back, Justin.
