There is a guy selling a box/column with reco kit for $450 I think, and I think Early Pony parts is similar for box/column.

Call me lazy, but if someone finds a bolt in fit, let me know, and I'll look into it.

Pretty much. I just took my column down there along with the fitting on the end of the rack & matched them up. My column I think is a billet specialties job, it is already a double D.

Are you just doing this to have a colapsable column? If so you can make the standard column collapsable without to much hassle. You just need a donor column. On the XP (solid shaft from steering box) we used an early commodore one. It still uses the original steering box & to look at it you wouldnt pick it from standard. Apart from the colapsable cage in the column tube under the dash.

Yes, that's the only reason I'm doing it.
The 68 column looked a pretty easy way to do it.
What did you do with the original solid shaft?

Just FYI, the ididit column's are not colapsable, they are solid shaft and tube.
I can confirm when I get home if you want.. it seems like your going another direction anyways.. Just putting the info out there for anyone else.

As per above pics, cut & shut the existing shaft with the donor. Where it has been cut & welded it is also pinned. The engineer was happy with it so its all legal. The cage in the original column tube is also from the Commodore.

I like the drying rack!

How did you mount it, so the tube can slide down, and use the crush part of the tube? From what I saw, the tube is hard mounted to the dash, and won't move.

I thought the ididit column wasn't collapsable, when I last looked into it.

In an impact the column will slide & collapse through the cage in the tube & the shaft will also collapse. Hopefully it never gets tested.

It got painted in the booth, its just hanging there so it didnt get scratched Smile

I thought the cage would colapse from an impact on the steering wheel, not from an impact on the steering box.
If the column is attached to the dash, so that it can't move the column tube won't colapse.

Thats what I thought, anyway.

It will collapse either way. If the front is hit hard enough to drive the rail back & move the steering box then the column & tube will give way. If it was hit from a chest impacting the steering wheel, the shaft will give way & the column tube will slide where it mounts to the dash allowing the tube to crush. Like I said I wouldnt want to be the crash test dummy testing it out. An impact that hard & you are going to keep the ambos busy for a while regardless of the column type. Honestly the only reason we did it in the XP was we had to for the engineers report. In saying that accidents happen & if that mod is the one that saves your life then its happy days.

You can put an XY collapsable inner striaght into a 66 outer as long as you use a falcon top bearing these are the same to XF. Cut the 66 outer short at the bottom and fabricate a floor mount plate to hold it, swage the hole in the plate so the outer will slide in it. once in situe glue it in with Sika so it can break and slide if you hit some thing. Machine the box shaft to take a rag joint. Cheap option, looks stock. XY inner is the same spline on the top end as a Mustang so any mustang wheel will work.
The falcon top bearing is in a rubber boot, you need this then it's a perfect fit in the top end, chuck the mustang top bearing stuff.

$145 for a 68 column and shaft from Capital Classics.. so that's a cheap enough option.
Hopefully they have one with the shaft and not just the outer and I'll be good to go.
