Getting a set of backing laser cut for my '68 EXP repli-bute project to create a custom wood veneer dash. I am also getting '67 templates done too.

I am hoping to develop the ability to make both brushed aluminium and custom veneer dashes (I am doing a Jarrah one for my car) for either year. Allowing '67 owners to go woodgrain, and '68 owners to go brushed aluminium over the stock options.

Not sure of costs yet, but believe I can come in comparable to the Drake price for their repros, but in real wood, not vinyl for '68. And hopefully similar costs for the aluminium sets (US prices, lower shipping! Wink2 ).

Just curious if this is of interest to anyone, to get an idea of numbers of spare bases to get cut with my set.

OEM LHD to fit factory/repro bezels/trim, making templates for hand crafted one off cut-and-paste conversions would be very difficult...

The intent is a user added overlay, will be tabbed to allow the user to easily apply them to an existing dash (as was done on the original 67's). If new bezels were required the cost would go up accordingly...

I am talking about the Dynacorn RHD sections that you can buy now. They are an exact "mirror" of a 68 type fascia. Even the mounting holes for the passenger side piece is mirror of the original. They obviously took a scan of a 68 & flopped the image.

If it is an exact mirror, then yes. Just apply the finish material to the other side. I have never seen them so can't be sure.

Would need one to test fit to be sure.

I'll have the '67 and '68 instrument cluster bases done probably this week or next, the other pieces are under prototyping right now. 2-3 weeks until they are approved for final cutting of the first batch. Will do both AC and non AC versions.

Would you (or anyone else) have one to loan out as I'd rather not buy one as I have no use for it (4 LHD 68's)? If someone had a complete set I'd provide the brushed aluminum at cost plus shipping or veneer (Jarrah or spotted gum stained to request, as I have both in hand) at a cut rate for labor to fit and finish as a test case.

gbx78 would probably want a brushed Al set as he has been chasing some. I would guess Sean (BossKraft) would want a set also but not sure if wood or Al.

I will ask.

Ok, thanks... here's a prototype of the Jarrah (all but the cluster, too hard to do without the base piece for me). Just did veneer over the repro bases, no metal substrate as will be done for the "production" ones (if hand laid counts as production!). '68's will be tabbed like the '67 deluxe and can either be used, requiring cutting slots to mount, or can be glued direct to the plastic.

The finish still shows some grain, and is satin. I did not want a super slick gloss flat surface, but a more "natural wood" look. Gloss/smooth could be done too.

and a one-off overhead console I did for the EXP too.... (it does match the others, just different lighting, insert not fixed in place just loose)

These look great. I did the same sort of thing with burl walnut and a SII jag many years ago

Dynacorn don't do the instrument bezel piece yet & there is no eta on it happening. I would be keen on brushed alloy to suit the repop rhd bezels.

Did you convert 67 or 68 bezels? The Dynacorn RHD are 68 only

I converted a set of 68 bezels, but also bought a set of the dynacorn ones. It was cheaper than pissing about with my ones getting them chromed etc.

The dynacorn ones also look more 67 than 68 to me. My original bezels had a square high beam lamp with a little horse logo in the lens (68 car) the repop rhd ones have a small circle with a blue (from memory) lens.

I'd need a sample to look at costs to make another RHD template if it is not a true mirror. Can you post pics of the Dynacorn RHD?

A big part of the cost is initial CAD and repeated cutting/tweaking to get the fit right. Hard part to scan on a platen and laser scanning is still expensive (although getting cheaper!)
