Ok are there any 4 speed Toploader experts out there?? HELP! SOS!

I have a reco 28 spline unit that's being naughty and smacking it doesn't seem to help. The box is noisy when you back off in any gear except reverse. quiet as at coast or under laod. Also all changes are smooth except 4th which gives a slight gear mesh noise when you lean on the gear lever.

I've pulled the box out and the only issue I can find is the output shaft end float is about 1mm. This seems way too much. Is this amount of play acceptable or do I need to fit a different output shaft bearing snap ring or pack the extension house to remove the play? What play is exceptable?

Happy to hear any views.. 🍿

They can wear the housing, I'd try and shim it. You about 40 thou of float now I'd try 10 and see if that fixes it. Are you sure the lay shaft has no float?

Yeah Shaun, looking at it again today.the lay shaft has around 8thou and the output bearing to 1st gear float is around 5thou. Are there any selective shims available that you know of?

Hmm,
not sure if the top loader is the same as other boxes i have dealt with, but those all had the end float checked with the yoke fitted and no extension housing seal.

I have a manual on these, i'll get it back from the neighbour and see what I can find for you...gimme a day or 2

Cheers
Jas
