Most towers have had the "oxy hole" mod to get at the grease fittings, so I used to just enlarge them. However the big hole allows a larger diameter weld & also gives a few mm more clearance for the 90 degree grease fitting for the gun.

Kerry how would you finish off a repair like this? Do you keep adding tack welds till the entire join is filled and then grind back or do you just grind back what is there and use a filler?

That is just tack welded to test the trunk lid opening. I will use the oxy/acetylene welder to weld it up as it will be neater & require little or no filler. Another method would be to TIG weld it, but the gap (on the panel being welded) would have to be closer, actually touching. Most would just MIG it up, however it is the messiest way to complete it.

Grinding back & using filler would see it cracking in no time.

Just to finish this conversation ......

Oxy welded after a light sanding of the MIG tacks ......

After a light sand with a flap disc. No filler required. I still have to complete the join between the 2 panels (below) later ......

Nice job on the gaps Kerry. Looking very nice. Did you take many pics of getting the door to guard gaps? If not we are doing the same job on a 69 at the moment. I will get a few pics of the process, I dont think many would have seen it done before.

The continuing saga of the gaps did not happen today as we had visitors (moe, jusTANG, gbx78 & Elly ....) , but we did get the 67 off the frame fixture & back on it's wheels (well the back ones .... ;). Dave, you have some grinding on Monday ..... Poke

davsan, have you priced up a set of new alloy heads instead of reconditioning your existing heads?
