Spoke to my mate. His one is a Rhino and uses the phone network for location. I don't think that would be as reliable/accurate as GPS.
However, it does mean that it works inside your garage, in car parks etc.

I've had a response from one supplier. They say it does need line of sight to sky, but will work as long as there is no metal above it.

So it could go in the parcel tray in one of the holes.
It could also go under the dash pad. If you have your dash out, you could cut a hole and mount the antenna under the dash pad.

I'm probably going to use a padded parcel tray, so could put the antenna under the top layer.

What about under a plastic parcel tray or speaker box on the back shelf. I'm keen to hide it so I can give em a suprise later..

Yep, as long as it's not metal then you should be ok.

I'll try and decide on a model to go with and get some details on here.
There are so many to choose from.
Still hoping we'll get them out here for under $100 each inc shipping.

I'll take one too. Who does the tracking? Is there a company you pay?

No, the tracking itself is all done by you, so there is no ongoing costs except for the simcard which could cost you as little as $10/month
You put a sim card in the unit (you can just use a cheap pre-paid if you like) and you can talk to it via your mobile.

You can send SMS to it and it will reply with it's current GPS co-ordinates that can then be entered into google maps or other software. Some will even reply with a street address.

You can also send SMS to it to cut the fuel/ignition etc.
One of the ones I was looking at even turns on the hazard lights when it cuts the engine so that other drives are alerted that the car is stopping.
