Hi All.

This is my first post on the forum.

I'm looking at importing a 69 fastback into Victoria. Details are below :

The car was produced as a 302 c.u., three speed transmission, sportsroof body style, that was painted Indian Fire Red. It now carries a Boss 351 Cleveland motor and is black. Transmission is a Hurst 4 speed Top Loader linked to a Ford 9 inch posi-traction rearend and 4:10 gears. Driveshaft has a safety loop in place and traction bars control the leaf springs in back. There is a fuel cell in the trunk with safety battery shut off. Seats are from a Mach One mustang with safety belts attached. Gauge cluster is aftermarket and has large white background dials, fully lighted. Rack and pinion steering with chrome steering column, upper and lower control arms with ball joints, black magic extreme electric fan with shroud, new battery, new high torque starter, LED tail lighting for safety and new tail light lenses and gaskets.

My questions are :

1. Do you think I will be able to get import approval
2. Do you think I will be able to get rego in Victoria

You are best talking to the engineer you will be using for the car, and seeing if he will look at and consider the modifications before you go too much further.
The fuel cell will have to go, for sure.
Try and find an engineer that can do the RWC too, that way there isn't any confusion about interpretations of the rules.

Where in Vic are you? I will be engineering a 69 soon too, so I can point you towards some in my area.

I think you may have a problem. I'd call my importer, Mick, at Mick's US Muscle Cars and Classics in Sydney on 02 9542 7271. He has been to DOTARs in Canberra and had extensive conversations with them in person, on this topic. He's taken photos and shown them various cars stock and modified to explain the differences, and got a pretty good idea of where they will accept or reject a car including Ellenors etc.

Good luck.

Hi Blkpny,

I'm in SE Melbourne suburb. If you are in the same area or close we could use the same one maybe ?

What's the story with your 69 ?

All imports from 69 onwards (In VIC at least) need an engineers to make sure they meet the ADR's.

My 69 is pretty stock, so it's a simple ADR check only.
I'm in Carrum Downs/Dandenong, I've spoken to engineers in Braeside and Hallam. Both have different views.... go figure!

Look at this list, and call ones with Imports next to their name.

UPDATE:
I just called the guy in Hallam.... I'm definately going thru him, and I told him a little about your car, and he wasn't too fazed by it. I'd call him first, and try and send as many pics to him as you can, to see if he thinks it should be OK, pending further inspection.

I have imported a 69 FB which was a 302 C4 but came in as a 351 with AOD and had 18" rims. No issues with importation, no questions asked. There is little or no provision for going into detail on what's been changed on the car if you look at the application form and if the changes are relatively minor, and are in keeping with the intent of the laws/restrictions. The way I see it, you have two separate issues, one is the importation of the car, the other is getting it licensed once it's here, they really are very distinct areas. It sounds like the fuel cell is definitely a no-no either way.

Sans the fuel cell I don't think you'll have difficulty and it sounds like some good advice and sources are on offer to help get it licensed in Vic. Best of luck.

Does anyone know of anybody that has bought a car and then had import approval denied ?

Is there a facility to have the import application approved BEFORE buying the car ? I say this because the form states yo umust attached purchase documents.
